We covered the first four keys in an earlier post. We continue here with the last three AND one more to round out the list.
5. Excellence is Required.
Of course excellence is required – everybody knows that. But do you realize being excellent means giving your customers something they can’t get anywhere else. Differentiate yourself, give outstanding customer service and you will be successful. And as a leader, don’t just expect your team to do all the work. Get down in there with them sometimes and get involved. If you are only there to celebrate the joys but you are never a part of things when the going gets rough, you are not demonstrating excellence and your success may be in jeopardy.
6. Vision is Necessary.
“Where there is no vision, the people perish.” Without a vision of what you want to achieve, you won’t know who you’ll need around you to help you get there. You have to have a vision for all aspects of your life–spiritual, mental, physical, financial and relational. To be truly successful in life requires balance.
7. Go to Success.
No successful person ever sat back and had success just drop out of the sky and fall into their lap. It doesn’t happen that way. You have to go out and grab the bull by the horns. That often involves making a decision on which direction to take and then going for it. Sometimes you don’t have all the information you need to make that decision, but you have to make the best decision you can with the information you have and then be strong enough to stand behind your decision. If you determine at some point that you need to change direction to continue on the path to success, don’t be afraid to make the decision to change. You have to take charge of your success.
So there are your seven keys to success, but we like to leave you with a little more. Here’s a +1 to bring to the party. We think it makes the first seven relevant.
8. Leave a Legacy Ahead.
Many people believe that you have to change the world to make a difference. But really, if you can make just one person’s life better, you can change the world–one small deed is all it takes. You have an excellent opportunity to leave a legacy ahead through mentoring and/or sponsoring someone. Mentoring is providing guidance and direction and an ear when necessary. Sponsoring is making something happen for someone else that will position them to go to a higher level. So, leave a legacy ahead and leave your thumbprint on someone’s future.
As you prepare for the new year, keep these keys to success in mind. Prepare to make 2013 your very best year–to YOUR success!
